How to prevent P2P activity?
Hi!
Is there a way to prevent P2P activities (e.g. Bit Torrent, Bit Lord, Limewire) for a certain computer in our network?
I am currently using a Linksys WRT54GS router in our office, and I want to limit the internet activity of this one computer in our network to web browsing only.
Thanks!

This PC you want to block, is it a Mac? Also, are you the network administrator?
Do let us know how the pc's are setup.

Re: How to prevent P2P activity
Here is our network setup... I am currently working in our family business, and we have a small office. There are currently 7 PC's that are connected to a network hub. This network hub is then connected to the Linksys router. Then, my mom's PC is directly connected to the router. Currently, only 3 PC's (2 from the hub, and the one directly connected to the router) are allowed access to the internet. The rest of the other PC's, I totally blocked from using the Internet via the router's Access Restriction.
The computer that I want to prevent from using P2P is a PC, but I still want it to be able to use the Internet for browsing and downloading from websites.
I am the only one in the office who knows the password of the router (via 192.168.1.1) so I guess I am the network administrator by default.
Hope this helps!
Some additional info... 2 PC laptops also connect to the network wirelessly, and 3 Macs connect wirelessly occassionally (when me, my brother, and my sister bring our personal Macs to the office).

You might need a web filtering solution like Websense.
The greatest harm can come from the best intentions.

Hi, Try this: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Securit...-Blocker.shtml
did not have time to read through documentation as I am rushing out. But understand that you can specify to block ports other than port 80 which is http default port.
Hope this helps!

Re: How to prevent P2P activity
i think linksys already has port-blocking capabilities. you just have to specify which ports you want blocked from which pcs. you can find a list of ports here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tcp_ports;
just search the page for the apps you want blocked (yahoo messenger, limewire, bittorrent, etc.)

Re: How to prevent P2P activity
It's easier to whitelist than to blacklist. Allow the most usually used ports, http, pop, smtp, imap, https, ftp, set your firewall rules to block everything else. You can also setup most firewalls to allow a single or a range of users to specific access.
My office for example is setup to let some users access ONLY email, nothing else. Simpler that way
