Forum creation question
we are planning to put up a local forum just like philmug (not related to computers) but on smaller scale. i noticed that "both" philmugs use xmb, while pinoymac and mapalad use phbb. what would you recommend? well be using a beige g3 on a 512 line as a server, user load is expected to be very light. thanks!

Hello there HAL9000 -- I selected PHPBB as the platform for PinoyMac because it is widely supported, the development team is actively updating it, it runs on Unix/Linux/OS X, has lots of mods, and a wide user base. I felt pretty confident that support wouldn't dry up after a couple of years.
I can't comment on XMB, though.

hi gonz, do you mind sharing us the necessary steps (request: by the number, laid down how-tos) on how to start a forum using PHPBB? We have a spare OS X machine and connection. Bandwith requirement too, would be minimal.
If possible kung paano narin mag palit ng theme.
Thanks in advance.

Ouch! You know I'm always ready and willing to help out anyone who asks me a question, but what you're asking for is highly technical and involves a lot of steps. Also, the procedure may vary depending on what versions of PHP and MySQL you have installed.
Nevertheless, I will try to answer your question as best as I can as soon as I get off from work. In the meantime, read Mark Liyanage's excellent tutorial on how to install PHP on an OS X 10.3 Mac. This will begin to give you an idea of what's involved in this project.
I hope you do not fear the Unix command line, because you'll be using it a lot.

XMB is pretty easy to setup and use. There are a lot of mods as well and there seems to be a thriving community of users and developers.

hi iamlet,
after, you've got mysql and php up and running, just go to the
phpBB site and proceed to the styles page to download themes. after that, check the mods page to customize the feel of your forum.
if you have a question, the phpBB forum is a good place to start.
i was able to set up a forum on an old G3 iMac quite easily. i also got mysql and php from Mark Liyanage's page.

Hey Paul -- any advice for easily changing the theme on a heavily modded board? Would hate to have to reapply the mods on a new theme folder -- can't even recall half the mods I've already applied.

just what i was thinking when i was applying mods. keeping track of the mods is important. especially since i applied most of the mods manually.
adding mods using EasyMOD is one way to ease the process of installing and uninstalling mods but the mod itself should be easymod-compliant.
anyway, if you want to know the changes made to the theme files, you can diff the theme files you have (the ones in the templates/<theme> folder) with the original theme files. then copy those changes to your new theme. it's not an easy way, but it's the only way i can think of right now.
