Developing Ipod Applications

Hi Guys.

Does anyone know how to develop apps for the Ipod? Is it even possible?
I read you can do it by using iPodLinux.. but is there a way I can do it straight from the Ipod firmware? And possibly add a couple of my own menus and run my own apps?
