To control how the desktop icons look like you can click on the desktop then on the menu bar click show view options.

I think Reinier meant how do you do a sort of "left justify" of the Icons on the Desktop. As we all know, selecting "Snap to Grid" and "Keep Arranged" makes the Icon line themselves on the right side.

At some point, This limited Icon "behavior" also drove me nuts. I have yet to see a way to arrange Icons on the left side.

    Hi Super_Ed,

Did you mean uncheck _both_ "snap to grid" and "keep arranged"?

This would now mean that you would have to _manually_ align all your Icons everytime, right?

It would be nice if there's a way to automatically snap and keep arranged on the left.

    Thanks,
    Christian

Believe it or not, even some pevious Mac OS 9 users (like me) sometimes have been used to placing Application Shortcuts on the left. Volumes (hard disks, CDs, etc.) always appear on the right along with the occasional documents.

Although, I've outgrown this in OS X. I'm just following this thread to see if it could be done.

i just tried out of curiosity, and you need not to align it every time.
