VShieldCore
What is VShieldCore? Checking the activity monitor, I noticed it takes up a whole lot of CPU and real memory.
PS: Yehey, this is my 500th post in PhilMUG!

I have the Virex 7.5 installed. Could this be the reason?

yep, i don't know why it's such a resource hog...
check out this user comment:
"But, when the background app takes up 30% of my cpu power - making my Mac COMPLETELY UNUSABLE - its just not worth it. Installed .Mac version 2 days ago, and its going OUT! Horrible software... (11/26/2004, Version: 7.5)"

Oh my goodness! Without deleting Virex 7.5 but just by resetting to default in its preference pane (lesser background monitoring activity), I noticed that the improvement appears to be immediate and dramatic! There's now considerably less usage of CPU resource and less HD activity. This means my HD will be working more efficiently and will emit less heat. I'll keep this under observation in the next couple of days. Thanks for the link and the insight.

Virex 7.5 is a resource hog
I had been using the .mac version, but it used up so many CPU cycles even when set to less aggressive scanning patterns, so I just got rid of it. Unless you want to be extra cautious about not passing infected Office files to PC-using folks, anti-virus software for the Mac is like a bicycle for fish -- not much point, really. At least not until the first MacOS X virus actually shows up.
