sending fax thru ethernet

Help.
I know you can send Fax thru modem using MacOS X.
But my question is, can you send Fax using ethernet connection?
My Mac is connected via etherNet (with internet settings).
Would like to hear some suggestions.

Try googling TPC.int -- they offer free fax services via the Internet.

I am no telecom engineer but I think fax works via DTMF or Dual Tone Multi Frequency that only telephone has. I don't think ethernet has that not unless they've come up with a substitute for it. Engineers, am I correct?
