I have a Powerbook 800mhz with 512MB RAM running Tiger perfectly. One of these days, I will be upgrading our old iBook G3 500mhz with 384mb RAM to Tiger too, and I'm pretty sure it will run okay.
Your Powerbook is waaay over the minimum system requirements for Tiger which is a G3 Mac with 256mb RAM (3GB hd space for OS needed). I say go ahead and upgrade. You are missing a lot!

I am using an iBook G4 800 with 640MB of RAM. I was using Tiger with 256MB of RAM but my liking for widgets urged an upgrade. I'm pretty sure your machine can handle Tiger.

I am a new mac user and my new iBook G4 comes with Tiger. It's so cool! So far, I'm more than satisfied with my buy. The dashboard widgets and spotlight are really great features!
Plus, there's always a new widget that you can download...hmmmm.

Your machine is not old and is within the required specs.

Dave_D and I have been setting up a system on the exact same specs you mentioned for our partner and it works just perfect.

I don't see any reason for you why miss the "wow" features of "Tiger" with the specs you have. I have never experienced crashing of apps and finder with a clean install of OS 10.4, so far. While 512MB is sufficient, I suggest to pump up your memory to 768MB at least to carry smoother and efficient work with widgets and between apps. Go ahead and experience the prowess of "Tiger".

I tried installing (upgrade and clean install) Tiger on two macs.
Clean Install-> No problems with TIGER (10.4.1)
Upgrade mode... minor issues.
Oh well, just a thought
