    Default Problems after installing Panther...

I just installed Panther last week. It looks great with all it's new features.

However since installing it weird things have been happening:

    - Safari doesn't work, it unexpectedly quits before any page is loaded. I've deleted Safari, downloaded a new one, nothing happened, it still doesn't work. I've also tried deleting the prefs, same problem.
    - Mail quits when clicking on a listed e-mail
    - Sherlock quits after spitting out results from the dictionary
    - HD memory missing. I know very well that I still have at least 4 GB left on my
hard disk even after installing Panther. But I keep getting a "Your start up disk is almost full " error message. Now I only have 65MB left without even downloading or installing anything new. Restarting doesn't help.
    - Software update doesn't work. I had to update everything from the apple site.
    - A hidden window ( see attachment). When using expose' I usually see this window ironically labeled as "hidden". When you click on it nothing happens. It just magnifies another active window.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

sorry for raising the obvious, but have you repaired disk permissions using disk utility? after upgrading to panther, you'll be surprised to find that thousands of permissions may need to be repaired (they'll whiz down your screen like a "matrix" credits sequence). many problems wil get sorted out after this procedure, which can take a while the first time you run it.

Yup, I've done this several times already. Most of the permissions have been verified and repaired, but the problems persist.

If you used the "Archive and Install" option during the Panther upgrade, the installer will move your previous system files to a folder names "Previous System" and reinstall a fresh copy of OS X on your hard drive. That folder can sometimes occupy GBs of hard drive space.

This is completely harmless. No worries here. :-)

Seems like your upgrade's shot. Could be a result of the drive directory being broken (this is why I always run Disk Utility from the installer CD/DVD and verify my system drive first before installation) or something else. Either way, I think the best course to take is to reinstall Panther, but this time doing a clean install (Erase and Install). You'll have to back up all the important stuff in your hard drive first though 'coz the installer will reformat the hard drive and erase all its contents before proceeding with the upgrade.

    Good luck!

I was afraid of that Henjie, my last resort. A clean install looks inevitable, been there before. Too much of a hassle. Might schedule this over the weekend. Need to borrow an external HD for backup.

What I did was the initial upgrade install from Jaguar to Panther. I stayed away from the "Archive Install" which was marked for re-installations. I was just too eager. I'll try to remember running Disk Utility to keep my setting, permissions and drive directory from going haywire.

And yeah, I found out that the hidden window is the pop-up blocker for all Mozilla based browsers, there is nothing I can really do about it. You're right it's pretty harmless.

Thanks a lot man. I'll post an update as soon as I get it done.

Yup, medyo hassle nga to do a clean install. Having to back up all those data, reinstall apps, etc. etc. Still, I make it a point to do a clean install for every major upgrade (Jaguar to Panther, etc.). I feel that it's worth the hassle. :-)

    Good luck!
