hey, relax with the question marks, bigfellow.

for me, it's not really a matter of life and death. the updates more or less just resolve some small glitches that came with the previous version.

and yes, you can download from the internet. just click the small blue apple logo on the upper left hand corner of the screen, at the end of the bar, and choose "software update." or you can go to apple.com and select the update from there.

It's good practice to install the updates recommended by Software Update. What I usually do though is wait a couple of days after an update is available before installing it, that way, you'll know from the others if there are any major bugs to watch out for (the pioneers are the ones with the arrows in the back ).

    bigfellow,

Yes, it's necessary. Not unless you really want to deny yourself the free improvements and performance tweaks that Apple provides to make the user experience better, faster and more efficient. Of course you can stay with the old stuff, but why not update? And Patrick has great advice (that I personally can't seem to follow); I have plenty of arrows in my back. (Patrick - just noticed your member ID and status box. Shouldn't it read "Penguin45 a.k.a PatrickGaerlan, like most of us? Sorry, in an editing mood this morning. Comes from working through the holidays).

Another thing, bigfellow. A small reminder to please be more specific about the subject line. Being more specific doesn't take much effort, and gets more people to respond to your post. It isn't difficult to say "Is it necessary to perform the software update?" than to just write the impossibly vague "is it necessary?...", which could mean just about anything. Something so nebulous and unclear can easily get lost among the more than 4000 topics we already have, and will not pop up in subsequent searches by other members in case they have similar inquiries.

PS I agree with maryannemoll, ease up on the superfluous question marks (and the ellipsis periods as well). We encourage proper use of language, grammar and form here. Don't abuse use your right to punctuate. (Or use emoticons.) It doesn't always look good, and is maddening, confusing and wearying to read sometimes.

You better work on it; before you know it, you might start to write like El CaMOTe.  (He he. Merry Christmas, Mang Tomas!)

I plead a royal 'grand mal' and am indeed a chronic "ellipsileptic.":roll::P:lol:

...and I do let our smilies evoke my feelings...and not to be too OT, I always fire-up my software update, after a few MUGgers have done so first !

Oh, that When I first registered with our new site, I wanted to use PatrickGaerlan instead of the Penguin45 I've been using at the "old" site (I figured it would be easier for my offline friends who didn't know I was a member of PhilMUG to recognize me). When our admins put in the "a.k.a." feature, I decided to place Penguin45 there so the other members who also came from the "old" site would know that I'm the same person

bigfellow, it's a bigger combo update because you're downloading several updates at the same time The more up-to-date your system is, the smaller the update you'll have to download.
