Default Help: Java 1.4.2 Won\'t Install (SOLVED)

Hi there, peeps. My iMac project upgrade is in it's final stages. Just last night, I installed Panther in it (iMac G3 233/Bondi) and all went well (all three hours of it, :drunk. I then fired up Software Update and did the necesssary updates (another hour, or so). So now, it's running on 10.3.4. I fired Software Update again, and two updates appeared; Airport Update (which I might not need) and Java 1.4.2 update. I selected both and tried to have them updated. Airport update didn't have problems, but the Java couldn't install. A message popped up and said that I should install Java 1.4.1 first to install 1.4.2. I then checked the Software Updtae log and looked if Java 1.4.1 was updated and installed. It was there. And so, just to be sure, I went to Apple's support page and downloaded Java 1.4.1 for 10.2 and above, Java 1.4.1 for Panther, and Java 1.4.2 Update. I was able to download them all. Installed 1.4.1 for Panther without a hitch. I tried Java 1.4.2 again, but, again it failed and said that I should install Java 1.4.1 first. I tried verifying and repairing my system disk, but it still wouldn't install.

    TIA

    Hi Al,

Your issue is a known problem with Java on some Mac OS X v10.3 (Panther) systems. Just look at this Apple technical note for the solution.

    Good luck,
    GeeCube

Hi Geecube! I tried out the steps that the page you posted here suggested and sadly, I still couldn't let it work.

I did some google searching and found this solution. Worked like a charm!

    Simple steps:

Go to Library>Receipts and look for QuickTimeJavaUpdate.pkg and place it on your desktop. Then install Java 1.4.2. Afterwhich you have to replace the QuickTimeJavaUpdate.pkg back to Library>Receipts Folder.

    Thanks for your help!
