help illegible fonts on safari and mail messages after upgrading to Tiger

Hi there,

was hoping somebody could help me out with this - ever since i switched to tiger, when i view websites on safari (inc philmug!) it displays a hard to read font for the text body. but viewing the same website on internet explorer, i do not encounter the problem. To top it off, that same hard to read font is what is displayed for all incoming mail messages (that are "replies") that i have received post-tiger upgrade. but all my old messages have maintained the normal font. something wrong with my font book? any advice would help i'm getting a headache trying to decipher the silly font.
