Default Can I save a DVD image file in OSX and burn it on a PC-connected DVD burner?

Cheapo me, I decided to get an external 120gb drive instead of a burner, and plan to use my bro's DVD burner by connecting the external hard disk to his machine.
Question is what software can I use to burn in the PC which can recognized Toast or IMG? Or any other suggestions on how I can do this?

    Hi there.

What exactly are you trying to backup? DVD movies?

If yes, the backups will be contained in VIDEO_TS folders, not in Toast or .img/.dmg format. On your bro's Wintel PC, use good ol' Nero for burning. :-)

    I actually want to:
    Burn iDVD movies
    Burn Toast formatted files
    Burn IMG formatted files

For Toast image files (*.toast), just change the file extension to .iso and use Nero to burn the image file using the File -> Burn Image option.

For .img/.dmg files, use the Terminal to convert them to ISO files:
    - Run Terminal.
    - Navigate to the folder containing the .img/.dmg file. Easiest way is to type "cd" (without the quotes) then dragging the folder to the Terminal window then hitting Enter.
    - Type "ls" to list the contents of the folder.
    - Type hdiutil convert filename.dmg -format UDTO -o filename.iso, press Enter.
    - An ISO file will be created in the same folder. Filename will be filename.iso.cdr. If burning to DVDs, just remove the .cdr from the filename. Use Nero to burn the ISO file.

For iDVD movies, save the project to .dmg first using the iDVD hack then convert the .dmg file to ISO. ;-)

    Hope this helps!

hi henjie, nice info. Anyway, if I don't have an external hard drive like piedad, can I connect a 12" PB to a windows network and burn iDVD movies directly to a DVD burner on a shared machine using that hack you mentioned?

By "burn iDVD movies", I take it that you mean burning an iDVD project saved to .dmg which is then converted to .iso ('coz while the iDVD hack allows you to burn to external burners, it doesn't give iDVD the ability to burn over a network). If yes:

Depends on the speed of the network. Are you using hubs or switches? 10Mbps or 100Mbps?

If the network is only running at 10Mbps, it's practically impossible. You're gonna get A LOT of buffer underruns (and ultimately coasters) during the burn process since the data transfer (from your PB to the burner) is just too slow. 10Mbps is only equal to 1.25MBps. To burn DVDs at 1x, you need a constant 1.385MBps. 5.54MBps for 4x, 11.08MBps for 8x, etc. etc.

It's still risky even on a fast network 'coz you're putting a lot of factors in the process: network speed, the speed of your PB's hard drive (which is definitely slower than most desktop drives), the speed of the shared machine's hard drive (if caching is on for the burn), etc. etc.

It's best to just copy the .iso file over to the computer equipped with the burner. :-)

I don't know why, but when I try to transfer a 4+gb file over the network to my bro's PC to burn a DVD image, I get a "disk full" error right about the time that the transfer has crossed the 3+gb size...but the target PC has lots of storage space yet. I think that there is a file size copy limit. That is why I will try to do it via the external hard drive.

    Henjie, et al...

I know this thread is old but i was looking for answers

I have a .ISO file and I have Toast 6 on OSX 10.3. I need to burn it to a CD using my Mac.

Using the info below, do I rename the .ISO to .TOAST before burning or can Toast burn a .ISO file as is?

    Thank you very much.

    Randy
