AVI to VCD/DVD burning?
I have AVI files that I plan to burn as a VCD and DVD media... viewable on home players.
First thing that I did was to drag the AVI file to TOAST and then set the settings then burned it.
Verdict: didnt work on notebook and dvd/vcd player (generic). All i can see was a blank screen and no audio as well.
Second thing that I did was to export the file from quicktime and after saving it as a .mov, dragged it to Toast and did the same thing.
Verdict: same problem above.
Can anyone give me suggestions on how to make this work? By the way the AVI file(s) that I was trying to burn was an episode from LOST.

First of all
I think Toast don't accept AVI file. How did you burn it?
If you convert AVI to .mov. .mov will work on toast, idvd, dvd studio pro.

do you have idvd? if you do, you can try this :
1. open the file on quicktime pro. dont export it. i did this before and my movie became so pixelized i kinda lost my gana to watch. what i do is i click on save as. the program will automatically save your avi file into .mov.
2. put .mov file into idvd and burn.
if this fails, i really think it might be your codec.

There are different flavors of AVI in the wild. It could be an XVID avi.
Just use FFmpegX to convert it

Hi Powerpee,
1. Toast can accept AVI files. Usually, if QuickTime Movie Player in your particular system can view the AVI file. The Toast Application on the same system is set to burn it to VCD or DVD.
Which leads me to question, how did you view the AVI files prior to your attempts at converting?
2. As mentioned by Kenneth, you most probably need the correct CODEC (Coding/Decoding) plugins.
Note: AVI is not a video format. It's sort of a "package". Within the package is the video format. In order to view the video, you would need the correct "key" to decode the encoded video.
3. Try installing the QuickTime plugins for DivX and Xvid as these are very popular nowadays.
Goodluck,

Ah... tama. I can view it with VLC but not with quicktime pro. I think wala ako nung proper CODECs for it.
That is probably why when I burned it via toast blank screen ang lumabas.
I will try to look for the plugins then. Thanks!!!
Check ko din FFMPEGX ni Kenneth.
Catrina,
I think decoding muna kasi di ko din ma open sa quicktime pro eh. hee hee

How can you convert DVDs to AVI? I'd like to make backups of original DVDs that I can view on a PDA.
Thanks!
