All media connected doesn't reflect on desktop. Help!

Anything I plug in doesn't reflect on the desktop but it's there on the finder window's left hand bar. Have been changing icons and stuff, that's all I may have done wrong. Already checked Preferences in Finder and all are checked / selected under "show these items on desktop." Can't seem to find what I've done wrong. Help please. Thanks.

Try deleting the com.apple.finder.plist in your home folder > library > preferences folder
