Simple, ask yourself the question, Pictures or Video, which do you want/need more.

A VideoCam that can take stills is not as good as a DigiCam that is meant for stills.

A DigiCam that can take video is not as good as a VideoCam that is meant for video.

If it is a combination, then emphasis on what ?? PICTURES & video

or VIDEO & pictures. Take your pick and if you have the corresponding bucks, go for it !!

Cheers, and btw, that really is a nice problem you have !!

call me a traditionalist, but i think a photographer's skills are really tested (and sharpened) by still photography, which is why i'd go for a really good digicam, maybe a 6-megapixel canon "digital rebel" (it'll set you back around 58K).

As El Camote said, what are you really looking for? Video or still pics? Up to now, no dv camera which can also take still pics can beat even the lowest consumer digital still camera of the same price (at least none that I've heard of yet). The still pics of dv cameras are limited to 1 or 2 megapixels only if I'm right. But if a dv camera is what you want, this thread might help

If I were you, I'd go with a digital camera. Its a lot easier to flip through a picture album than to play back dv footage on the TV, diba? This thread might help.

Since your folks are going to finance this, I don't know if a Canon 300D/digital rebel is right for you. Though its undeniably the best bang for the buck digital camera out there now, if your parents are anything like mine, the first thing they'll say is: "Ba't ang laki naman niyan!". They might not understand why its such a great camera. All they might want is something small and easy enough to carry around and operate. In that case, the Canon IXUS 500, S50 or S60 is a good buy. But a very good deal is Bagwis' G5 which I think is still up for sale. Good luck!

PS. on the other hand, if you have a big enough budget, say around 50k or maybe not even, I'm sure you can buy both!

Also have an M3 but I hardly use it now !! Dunno if I should sell it !!
