    Get a netbook. Here's why:
-They cost nearly the same (if not cheaper) than a 2-3 year old 2nd hand iBook.
-iBooks are thick and heavy compared to the average ultraportable.
    - The later iBooks were plagued with logic board problems
-Ram upgrades + Battery replacements for the old machine are harder to come by.
    -Tiger? maybe. Leopard? I dunno.

    PS
    This arrived yesterday.

There's something familiar about the packaging.

    It runs on XP though

I was faced with the same dilemma before, since I needed a laptop that is really portable but powerful enough to handle my daily needs. I almost got an MSI Wind and an HP Mini, but decided against both because of my preference for OSX. In the end, I opted for a Macbook Air instead.

But if limited by budget, I would choose an MSI Wind over an Ibook or the HP Mininote. The HP's aesthetics remind me of a Mac, but it's just too slow (it uses a Via processor). The Ibook, unless brand new, might present problems for you in terms of repairs due to wear and tear. I saw a lot of Gilmore shops selling the Wind for 19k+ (that's without an OS).

I too will go with a netbook.

I've tinkered with a lenovo ideapad S10 and it seems to do its job quite well. Its also the slimmest of the bunch.

    Cheers.

thanks for the suggestions guys. i'm almost 90% sure of getting a netbook (unless i get a really good deal with an ibook/ macbook), just don't know yet which brand since i have not seen it in actual and have only been reading reviews from the net.

i've seen some msi wind units from the net installed with OSX. that's actually pretty interesting but i read some of the laptop's functions might not work. will be going to HK after xmas and i might buy there but will be checking the actual units in manila when i get back from my business trip.

are the 8.9 inch screens too small? i think not all brands offer the 10 inch ones. well, i'll see for myself if it's too uncomfortable for my eyes and for typing.

the hp mini-note looks good but quite pricey compared to acer, msi and asus.

why can't apple release their netbook? is this market some sort of a fad?

Just be careful when considering laptops with screens which are 8-9 inches. In theory, it sounds like an ideal size especially when we're talking about portability, but if you're the type of person who does a lot of word processing or browsing, you might find your eyes tiring out easily due to the small screen, and even tired fingers from the cramp keyboard real estate. Get a 10 incher instead.

    Or just get a macbook

    I would get a netbook:

    here are my candidates:
1.) MSI wind (cheap, and good specs)
2.) HP Mini 1000 (good specs, better presence of manufacturer [peace of mind]. stylish, keyboard is not that small).

TIP, for browsing in firefox, you can zoom in and zoom out the page to your preferred setting so you won't get eyestrain, especially those who own a 7incher eee pc.

Saw a MSI Wind running OSX and other apps, all working seamlessly, including wifi, which shouldnt work according to the thread on it elsewhere in the forum. The trackpad was kinda twitchy but very usable. If youre needing OSX in a really portable machine and can live with the geekiness of making it all work this could be your compromise.

I read somewhere that the new HP MiniNote now uses an Atom processor. Is this already available in the stores?
