Default Need help with an external HDD

hey guys, need some help again.

    i got myself a 200GB Seagate 7200 HDD and a dual Firewire/USB enclosure.

i created 4 partitions and when i'm connected via USB, all 4 drives are recognized and come out on my desktop.

the problem is that when i switch to Firewire, only 3 partitions appear, which means almost 70GBytes are missing!

am i doing something wrong? or was i ripped off? need some advise lang please. i need to work on Firewire because i do a lot of stuff on FCP and other apps.

    thanks in advance

    200GB HDD? Meron ba nun?
(oh, bka may magreact nnman dyan, nagtatanong lng)
    ang nassetup ko p lng ay 80, 120, 160, 250.

try ifformat mo na lng ulit and less partition.
(thats my own opinion) and FW connection k na lng.

older macs can only read 137GB of space.

ako lng ba ang mgssuggest? :wound:

Here's a quote (from guru Henjie no less) from this thread that might be able to explain your predicament.

To use the above workaround, you need to partition the hard drive using a Mac with native 48-bit addressing support. That way, the full capacity of the drive will be available for partitioning. Otherwise, Disk Utility will only "see" a max of 137GB available for partitioning.

Best workaround is to install the drive in an external Firewire enclosure with 48-bit addressing support. Or buy one of those ATA/100 or ATA/133 PCI cards, making sure it supports 48-bit addressing (all ATA/133 cards do, some ATA/100 cards don't).
    Hope this helps.

John: can you check which Firewire bridge/chipset your enclosure is using? Fire up System Profiler and look for the info in the FireWire section. Note the manufacturer (Oxford Semiconductor, Prolific, etc.).

Also, run Disk Utility and check if the missing partition is listed there. If yes, try mounting it by highlighting the partition then going to File -> Mount.

hey, thanks for the replies guys.

peng- it's a 200gig seagate drive, tried reformatting na rin, didnt work, weird

henjie- ok, it says that it's manufactured by LSI Logic, the model is SYM13FW500

i opened disk utility and still, it can only see the 3 partitions. was i ripped off? should i return it na? what should i look for in an enclosure?

thanks for the help again. hope i can make this thing work

I'm not 100% sure but I reckon the problem is with the enclosure's Firewire chipset. To ensure maximum compatibility with OS X, buy an enclosure using the Oxford 911 (FW400) or Oxford 922/921 (FW800) chipsets. If in doubt, bring your AlBook so you can test the enclosures first (System Profiler, Manufacturer under Firewire should be Oxford Semiconductor). :-)
