how to build an external hdd?
sorry guys, i tried to read all the other forums re: enclosures etc but i got confused more. here is my situation:
i need a portable storage media to transfer files from pc to mac (mac to pc) as convenient as the flash drive. but ill be copying at least 10g at one time.
need this as a portable media, back hdd and my budget is only upto 40g of hdd.
my cousin have a 20g 2.5 hdd in a 2.5 usb enclosure which is non-branded. it is detected by my PB G4 12" but hangs when I start to copy files. me diff ba ang hdd na generic pang mac and pang pc?
what brand of enclosure should i buy? firewire 400 o 800? for the hdd? pwede generic? or should i get an Ipod? i need the portable media to be readable with any pc or mac without the need of installing a software every now and then.
if only there is an avail 10g or 20g thumbdrive...

same question, would an iPod (20G or 40G) suffice for "formatting purposes only"?
a local distributor is offering me a 20G HDD, USB 2.0 for 11k, im thinking getting an iPod instead.
advice please.

So long you format in FAT32, the Mac will recognize it wheter it's an iPod or a external HD.

Might be time consuming but have you tried transferring files one by one rather than dragging them all at the same time?
