if you are going to be crazy about media files (photos, mp3's, photoshop files) then by all means, get one. At the very least, as a back up. But if you'll be a heavy user of these files, it will be part of your main file storage.
I tend to keep my photoshop and illustrator projects (50MB minimum) there now after I've completed each one.
An external FW HDD would be ok, at least you could always add another one (esp when hdd prices fall) and daisy chain them.

An iBook or a PowerBook can only accommodate one 2.5" hard drive so unless you're thinking of replacing your iBook's 30GB unit with a higher-capacity hard drive, you're gonna have to buy an external Firewire/USB 2.0 (Firewire is recommended) hard drive (2.5" or 3.5" ) to act as your secondary drive.
2.5" - laptop drive
3.5" - desktop drive
You can install any 2.5" 9.5mm laptop drive in an iBook/PowerBook. And any 2.5" or 3.5" hard drive installed in a Mac-compatible external Firewire enclosure will work with a Mac. No such thing as a PC-only or Mac-only hard drive in this day and age. :-)

Is your ibook under warranty? If so, you might loose your warranty if you upgrade your hard disk by yourself.
Either you have it done by your reseller or buy an external HD to use.
I had mine upgraded to 60gig during my purchase so that I wont have to worry about the size for some later point in the future.

what if you have the HDD changed at Apple center? Would it void the warranty from your reseller? .. i guess not ?

No one's quoting prices.
I'm also thinking of getting more storage for my Mac - as I'm down to just 6 gigs (from a 30) and I'd rather get an external one.

Well, I got an 80GB 2.5" drive for P8,500 from ditoy_eagle to replace my PowerBook's internal 60GB drive. I paid another P1,500 to have it installed at LMK.
I got an external Firewire/USB 2.0 enclosure from Cooldrives.com, mainly for backups. I like it because it's both Firewire and USB 2.0 (makes it easy to use with PCs too) and the HD is in a removable tray (lets me use several hard disks without opening the enclosure, you just have to purchase extra trays).
