Canon rebel 300D
Hi im planning to buy a Canon rebel camera but it occured to me that it has been a year or more since it came out, would you guys happen to know if there'll be a new model which will be introduced that's similar to the 300D anytime soon? hopefully the either the new model will be cheaper or the 300D will become cheaper.

is that the canon eos 300D? According to canon philippines website, the lens kit is on sale for P59,950 between June 1 to 30. Comes with a 256mb cf card, a mini tripod, a canon memory card wallet, and an eos bag. is this a good deal?

yup quicksilver but i want to know if there'll be any upcoming models that would probably be better than the eos 300D. Perhaps a 2nd generation eos300d that might be coming up in the near future. I dont want to be left with an old model.

The thing is, there will always be a newer and better model on the horizon. There's no getting around that. It's what you do with the model you have that really counts. Lots of photographers out there (amateurs and pros alike) are doing just fine with their D30s, D60s, D100s, etc. etc. Old doesn't automatically mean bad or useless. :-)
The truth is that the Digital Rebel is relatively "young" since it was announced just 10 months ago. The 10D is 6 months older but hasn't been replaced yet. If you need a Digital Rebel now, there's no sense waiting for the next version. If the Digital Rebel seems inadequate to you and you're hoping the next version will have the extra features that you need, maybe you oughta look at the 10D instead, or even the Nikon D70. ;-)

Henjie, would you happen to know the product cycles of these cameras? when would probably be a wise estimate as to the next model being unveiled? i'm still weighing the option whether to buy now or save for something better in the future.
thanks!

You can check out various sites like dpreview.com and check out their forums. A lot of information regarding upgrades, current models and other bits of news can be found. As well as the great product reviews. I know a previous thread here mentioned that the 300D will be coming out with a black-bodied version but that seems to be a Japan-only release for now. Check out the review of the Nikon D70 on dpreview.com as well. Another great DSLR! The way the prices are dropping locally, any camera would be a good choice price and feature-wise. But regardless of the camera once you have it, it'll certainly last you quite a while!

According to this page:
EOS-300D: announced Aug. 20, '03.
EOS-10D: announced Feb. 27, '03.
EOS-1Ds announced Sept. 24, '02.
It took Canon almost two years to go from the D30 (May '00) to the D60 (Feb. '02). More than two years for the 1D (Sept. '01) to be replaced by the 1D Mark II (Jan. '04).
Majority of Canon's product announcements seem to be made during the months of February and September. I don't think there's gonna be an EOS-300D replacement anytime soon though, at least not until the 10D is replaced.
I'm no Canon expert though. Better ask Vic for any rumors or whatnots. ;-)

Here's the thing, if you don't get a camera now, chances are a new model will be announced in one of the major photo shows that happen within the year, (photokina in europe or photo west or east in the states) Though there's no saying what models will be announced. meaning we don't know if the newer models coming out will be point and shoots, prosumer, or professional.
here's another site that you can check for news on gear and the industry in general www.pdnonline.com (photo district news)
Thing is, if you keep holding out for something better, believe me, you're never going end up buying one. that's the thing with digital cameras also, the turn over of newer models is just so fast. I mean a year after i purchased my D 100, the D70 comes out which was cheaper and better!
good luck!

something\'s cooking at canon
without getting the person into trouble by mentioning his name and title, let's just say that i got good info from someone in the upper upper management of canon phils that they've got something in the bag to pit against the nikon d70. he just kept saying its gonna give the d70 a run for its money and he did tell me to wait if i could - the time and extra money i could save would be worth the wait - daw!
now since the 300d has been out a significant while and the d70 pummeling it with better reviews i think canon is just about ready with a counter punch. i'd sit and wait.

Hi,
Canon has recently updated it's flash exposure system that was notoriously inaccurate. The E-TTL2 system is available on the top of the line 1D Mark 2. This probably means that they will be applying this to a new set of cameras sometime in the near future.
If you do a lot of flash photography, a work around with the 300D, 10D and 1D as well as the D30 and D60 is to buy the inexpensive sunpak PZ5000AF flash and use the camera in manual exposure mode with the flash set to auto-thyristor. This way, the flash does the exposure on its own without communication with the camera.
Most of my best flash work was shot with a sunpak.
I don't think there are any other defects with the 300D that need to be overcome.
