Default APC Back-UPS: Am I missing something?

    Hi guys,
Just recently purchased an APC Back-UPS CS 500. Will I need a separate AVR for this? I noticed that there are some models with built-in AVRs. Did I made the wrong purchase? I thought that surge protection is the same as voltage regulation. Please help.

Don't worry. You made the right purchase. All 6 of the Back-UPS CS 500's outlets are surge-protected (3 x battery backup + surge protection; 3 x surge protection only). No need for a separate AVR. :-)

    Hi, reviving this thread..

Is the APC Back-UPS CS 500 enough for entry level iMac and 250 gb external hard drive? Any pros and cons on using UPS?

The iMac is fairly low on power consumption, so the CS 500 can handle it and an external drive, no problem.

The advantage in using a UPS is that you won't lose your data as easily if there's a sudden power outage. Also, the voltage is "cleaner" than with an AVR because you get line-conditioning circuitry in addition to the battery back-up, so your electronic equipment will be less susceptible to electrical damage. Only downside is the upfront cost compared to a powerstrip or AVR.

I have 2 APC back-ups 500 and its really great to have these.

I guess its not really that expensive. Got mine for around 2k a piece. Small price to pay for protecting your big investments.

Yes, it's worth having a UPS. You don't know when surges happen. APC's brands are the best.

Btw, i have the CS 500 edition and it cost me 4,300php. You might be referring to another edition, ice_man. Nevertheless, it's more or less the same kind of protection.
