why does my shuffle do this?
I just got the new shuffle the other day, but i still havent been able to upgrade the software of the shuffle yet. My problem is that when i add songs from my library to the shuffle and then erase the song from my itunes library the song inside the shuffle gets erased as well. Is this normal?

Re: why does my shuffle do this?
i think it's because your shuffle is in "auto-sync" mode, which means any changes you made to your iTunes library will be automatically reflected to your shuffle..

Plug in your Shuffle and when the iPod's profile pane appears in iTunes under 'Devices,' check out the 'Manually manage music and videos' under Options.

Re: why does my shuffle do this?
What exactly is the problem? That it updates automatically or that you can't upgrade its software BECAUSE it updates automatically.
I ask because I'm thinking that the issue may resolve itself once you're able to update the ipod's software.
Why not just let it sync, (since you probably don't have choice now), then exit everyting - leaving the iPod mounted, then running the software update for it.
Or are you saying it's on a perpetual state of syncing that you can't get out of?
You can also try pressing option+command WHILE connecting the ipod so it would bypass the syncing (regardless if you're on autosync) and see if that helps.

Re: why does my shuffle do this?
sorry, i think you misunderstood my previous post, what i meant was if i put a song into the shuffle from my itunes library and then eject the shuffle, delete the song from my itunes library and mount my shuffle again to the itunes it will automatically delete the same song that i had just deleted from the library automatically

that's exactly what synchronization is all about. There's nothing wrong with your iTunes or shuffle, and there's no way out of it. The song must be in the iTunes library if you want it in the shuffle, even if you are uploading the songs manually.

Re: why does my shuffle do this?
Apple assumes you want to have all your songs in your iTunes library and that you want to just bring around a copy in your Shuffle. Apple doesn't consider that you want to use your Shuffle as external storage so that you can delete the song from your iTunes library.
So you'll just have to keep that song in your iTunes library if you want it in your Shuffle.
That's the main reason I haven't purchased an iPod. Can't use it as external storage and FireWire capability was removed.

Re: why does my shuffle do this?
It's just as elbertc and carloslegarda described.
The closest "solution" you can get to is what michaelkenji described in the 2nd post: set it to "manually manage songs" in your shuffle.
It's been a while since I used that mode. From what I remember, if you set it as such, you'll have different sets of "libraries": your "main" library and the the "manual library" in the said iPod.
Technically if you delete a song from the "itunes library" (not the ipod's) then you should achieve what you seem to want to accomplish... at least that's how I did it the last time - and that was with a regular iPod. I don't know if the shuffle has a special "setup" because of how small the space it has - maybe it only allows auto-syncing. Can anyone confirm this?
