i haven't asked pelican about the rebate yet. i wonder where he is right now, vacation perhaps...
but if they'll ask for the AT&T num, then that sucks. i don't have that one...

Yup, you need the ATT number to avail the rebate. the will send you the rebate code via sms.

Re: AT&T Number needed for the iphone rebate?
unfortunately, it makes sense. apple would want to give rebates to actual AT&T subscribers.
question, can it be any AT&T number? or does it have to be one registered with the system as an iPhone number? if it's the former, can a number be used to receive the rebate code more than once?
TIA.

I don't think it's fair. People who paid $600 knowing they have to go through all the hassle of unlocking it probably deserves the credit more. AT&T did not change their rates. Apple did. Ideally, the receipt should be sufficient to get the credit. They just found a way to minimize their losses by taking the exclusivity route.

well, we can hardly blame apple for not thinking about all the non-AT&T-activated iphones out there, but i agree, the receipt should have sufficed as an alternative means of claiming credit.
anyway, the official policies are here:
http://www.apple.com/iphone/storecredit/
there's a link to an FAQ there somewhere, too.

Yes

I don't think so, that would be a very very bad loophole in the system :-)

lucky for those who activated their iphone w/ att
when everybody calls nokia... i answered iPhone; when people peek at windows... i stared at MAC; when humans aim w/ canon... i shoot with Łeica; when they swim with padi... i dive with Naui; when all men wear Hanes... i wear none

I guess it's apple one way of thanking their customers who have honored their exclusivity contract.
I believe that the hackers do not deserve to be given the rebate.

Re: AT&T Number needed for the iphone rebate?
to each his or her own opinion, i suppose, but i don't believe either that this rebate came out of apple's big corporate heart.
at the end of the day, it's all just business. drop the price $200 to clear out inventory preparatory to rev B release (and triple sales after the price drop), give a $100 rebate to keep the restless natives happy, and limit the rebate to only AT&T-activated phones to keep AT&T happy and, well, freeze out the others and retain some of the rebate money. what did that report on the new york times say? out of 1 million phones sold, only 600,000 have been activated on AT&T? that's a lot of people saying "we love your phone, but we hate/can't use AT&T."
much as i love apple products, i've never confused that with love for apple the company--which, as any number of apple histories will show--has been as shrewd and as tight-assed as its competitors, including microsoft.
i wasn't expecting the rebate, and i don't feel particularly bad if i don't get it; i do look forward to more consumers asserting themselves over these onerous "exclusivity" contracts. eventually, it's these hackers who'll free up the market and bring prices down to what they should be, not what the telcos say (esp. AT&T, which isn't even subsidizing the iphone).
