Sound Output difference from the lineout of Ipod
Based on the recent topics on the ipod and its accessories.
I noted the thread and articles on the difference in the output quality that comes from the line out for the earphones and the output quality that comes from the Dock connector.
So I experimented on this and played A Santana composition in my portable speakers using the same settings and....
1. The sound output is very much louder in the Dock connector plus a better quality output.
2. Volume control in the ipod will not work if the Dock connector-DOCK-lineout is the one used as compared to the earphones line out (the one on top)
Wish I knew this sooner so I have used my ipod DOCK sooner...

there are two type of audio output:
low/line level signal, which is the one in your dock is unamplified, it has a high output impedance which is the right rate your amplifier needs that drives your 8-ohm speaker.
high level output, the one in your earphone jack is already amplified with a 16-ohm impedance that suits your earphones, but not your loudspeaker, if you connect it to an amplified speaker, it won't match the needed input impedance of your amp thus producing a lower output.
too techie ba?
people, as always correct me if im wrong.

Is this why it seems that less battery is consumed when the line out is used (connected to a stereo) as compared to the earphone jack? If so, would using the PocketDock's line out to the car stereo (via a tape adaptor) result in longer battery life as well?

yup...because its not yet amplified...you'll notice this when you cannot turn up/down the volume from your iPod
also notice the ipod/bmw connection that uses the dock...it will produce a better sound quality since the signal wouldn't be pasa-pasa...inamplify na ng iPod i-aamplify pa ng car stereo.
