I actually have the same problem. My HDD is already full. What I did was to transfer the songs immediately after copying them from the CD to my Ipod then delete them in Itunes. Problem is that, in case my ipod crashes or something, I will have to repeat the process all over again in rebuilding my songs. This also assume that I have all the original CDs with me.....if not, im dead.
Any better suggestions?

I don't think that is advisable or even possible. If you erase the file from your HDD, the same file will be removed from your iPod once you reconnect it to your computer.

you can erase your songs in your HDD, just make sure you uncheck the "automatically update ipod" in itunes preferences. Then, if you want some songs from the ipod to be transferred to your itunes library, you will need ipod to HDD apps like Senuti or Podworks. Search the forum for other apps you can use.

to answer your question, NO, you can't rip directly from CD to iPod. However, you can delete songs from your HD without losing the copy in your iPod.
CD ripping and iPod loading are two separate processes.
The process of ripping entails iTunes 'playing' the CD and converting/encoding the sound waves into a compressed digital format. To do this, it needs to write the resulting file into your hard drive--into the folder designated as your iTunes library.
Although it contains a hard drive, your iPod is not your iTunes' designated library. Even if it was, it will be written into that drive as mere files, which will not be played by the iPod.
For your digital music to be played by the iPod, it needs to be loaded by iTunes using iTunes' own special process.
You'll need to rip first and load into your iPod after. After doing so, you'll have two copies of the same song (one in the iPod, one in the iTunes library). If you want to reclaim the space from your hard drive, you'll need to delete those songs from the library.
Just make sure your iPod is set to manual. Otherwise, it will sync with iTunes, and delete from the iPod whatever songs you deleted from the iTunes library.
Does this make sense?

Re: rip cd to ipod
I just noticed... to move music to iPod you use iTunes, and to do vise versa you use Senuti.
iTunes=Senuti
Senuti is the reversed of iTunes!

My ancient G4 has Iphoto 1.1. I can't seem to upload my pix to my IPOD. I already installed the software that came with my ipod video but can't upload my pictures still. What should I do please? I have no problems with my music just the photos
