    Default Questions Re: iTunes

    1. if i add music files to 'LIBRARY', does it copy all the music files again? Does this mean I get to use 2x my hdd space? can i delete the original copy?

    2. i have music files (using thumb drives, hdd...) that i copied from my friends PCs and Macs. I was successful in copying the .mp3 files into my 'LIBRARY' but the .wma files were not copied. How do i do this? If i double-click the .wma, it plays using my VLC...

    3. after adding the .mp3 files into my "LIBRARY", how do i convert them all, at once, to a 192 bit rate format?

    4. if i plan to organize my music into categories, update the tags (album, artist)... how do i do this in iTunes? will it update automatically, my iTunes Music Folder? Is organizing my music files using iTunes the most efficient way to go?

    5. will the iTunes re-copy a music file that is already present in the LIBRARY?

    6. i copied music files (using thumb drives, hdd..) with incomplete tags... if i connect to the NET, can they be updated automatically...

    7. sorry for being so OC, but with more than 60G worth of songs... i need to manage them that GOOD! thanks in advance guys!

    Hi!
    (1) I think by default it does. You can turn this function off by unchecking it on the preferences tab.

    (5) Nope.

Sorry, that's all I can help you with :wound:

it depends on the setting in your Advanced tab in iTunes' Preference settings. There's an option "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library"

    2. i have music files (using thumb drives, hdd...) that i copied from my friends PCs and Macs. I was successful in copying the .mp3 files into my 'LIBRARY' but the .wma files were not copied. How do i do this? If i double-click the .wma, it plays using my VLC...

first of all, that's considered PIRACY. secondly, iTunes does not support .wma

    3. after adding the .mp3 files into my "LIBRARY", how do i convert them all, at once, to a 192 bit rate format?

you can't in iTunes. There might be a 3rd party application that allows you to re-encode music files. Bear in mind that once compressed into low bit rates, music files are difficult to convert to higher bit rates.

In iTunes, you can convert the format for songs in one go. Go into iTunes prefs and select your desired format under Importing. You can then convert by Right clicking on a song, or using Advanced | Convert Selection to... in the menu bar.

    4. if i plan to organize my music into categories, update the tags (album, artist)... how do i do this in iTunes? will it update automatically, my iTunes Music Folder? Is organizing my music files using iTunes the most efficient way to go?

This usually is a manual process. iTunes can look up the CDDB only if it's from an original CD.

You could try ieatbrainz, an MP3/AAC Tagger. It's not 100% accurate (I estimate 50%) and requires manual intervention, but still, it's a good start.

    5. will the iTunes re-copy a music file that is already present in the LIBRARY?

    Yes, it will

    6. i copied music files (using thumb drives, hdd..) with incomplete tags... if i connect to the NET, can they be updated automatically...

    No, it won't

    7. sorry for being so OC, but with more than 60G worth of songs... i need to manage them that GOOD! thanks in advance guys! np

In my experience iEatBrainz is around 60% accurate, 20% with wrong tags, 20% with no acoustic information available on their database. I highly suggest that you try it, another member used it and even the chinese songs in his iTunes got tagged correctly.

after adding the .mp3 files into my "LIBRARY", how do i convert them all, at once, to a 192 bit rate format? - uhm I don't think this is possible... or if it is, it doesn't make sense since your source is already limited by its original encoding / compression.

    HTHs.

Kelvin is right. Converting "up" (from a low-res encode to a higher one), while possible, is not at all recommended.

A low-res encode drops immense amounts of detail so that the song will have a small size. When you try to bump it up, where will the converter get the lost information? It can't interpolate information that isn't there to begin with.

It's like taking a picture with your cellphone and then using Photoshop to improve it so you can create a detailed EDSA billboard from the original picture - not a pretty sight. The picture detail just isn't there.

Always encode at your preferred resolution, or above it. You can't create slacks from a pair of shorts, but you can always cut down your slacks to make a pair of shorts.

If you're stuck with your low-res MP3s and don't have the source material to make a new encoding, you're just S.O.O.L.

when you sync your iTunes to your iPod does it make a mirror image of what you have on your iTunes to your iPod or does iPod just update the music you dont have & copies them to iPod? or is updating (music you have in iTunes but not on iPod) an option you have when you update your iPod?

is it possible to keep some music in iPod that you dont have on your iTunes?
or update your iTunes with what you have on your iPod?

coz there could be a possibility that i have erased some music in iTunes & if i update my iPod i might lose them (in iPod) as well coz they are no longer in iTunes. gets nyo? (nakakalito ba?) hope to get some clarifications.....

im determine to have our 1st ipod next month. will goto delaware to buy myself (actually for my wife) 1. its cheaper there (no taxes) + thanks giving so umaasa na bka magkaroon pa ng additional sale. will use it mostly for music & transfer pics from digital camera while on vacation.

do you guys think a 20G will do or should i go for the 40G? 4th gen over 3rd gen (cheaper) ?

    thanks in advance

Get the 4th gen! Battery life is more than enough reason to go for it!

There will be three options for you when you connect your iPod to iTunes you either:
    (a) Mirror all the songs on your iPod,
    (b) Manage the songs by playlist or
    (c) Manage the songs in your iPod individually (you create your own playlists in the iPod)

I use option B since I only have a 15 gig 3rd gen... option A is perfect if you have a 40 gig iPod though
