when hard disks (including your ipod's) get formatted, they take up some space for the hidden files. don't worry about it, it's normal.

Hard drives are never the exact size. Capacities are usually slightly less. Take for example my 80GB HDD, it is actually 74.53GB. Don't worry about it.

the conversion factor between the manufacturer's rated capacity and what your computer actually sees is approximately 0.93132257. the exact number is 1 billion divided by 2^30.

from the computer's viewpoint, 1 kilobyte is actually 1,024 bytes (or 2^10), 1 megabyte is 2^20, and 1 gigabyte is 2^30. however, when manufacturers say 1 gigabyte, they only mean 1 billion bytes.

thus, to get the true capacity (as seen by the computer), multiply the rated capacity by the conversion factor. for example, 40gb x 0.93 = approx 37.25gb, and 80gb is approx 74.5gb

Would anyone have any clue why theres approximately 8.5 GIG worth of data under 'others' when i check the capacity indicator for my 30gig ipod in iTunes? Its driving me nuts! And i discovered a hidden 60MB spotlight folder and a 10 GIG iPod_Controls hidden folder!

Is that normal? a 10 gig folder for the controls????

    Please help!

Sounds to me like you have files other than compatible music, movies and audio stored on your iPod.

AFAIK, the ipod_controls folder is a hidden folder where all the media that you sync to your ipod goes. there's a subdirectory, if i'm not mistaken, named Music, it's where all your files go to. that should explain the 10GB of iPod_Controls folder. as for the 8.5GB worth of Others, i don't know about that.
