question about charging 3G iPod with newer usb cables
i have a 3G 20G ipod and i'm borrowing my brother's ipod nano's usb cable (because i left my firewire cable at home) to connect to my macbook so i can charge my ipod but my ipod is not even registering on my macbook much less charging.
does the nano's usb cable not work with the older 3G ipod?

Re: question about charging 3Gipod with newer usb cables
Hi Bumblebee, AFAIK, only the later iPods (starting with the 4th gen/click wheel and minis) support USB charging.
1st-3rd gen (4 button + touch wheel) will still require the power adaptor/Firewire port.

Re: question about charging 3G iPod with newer usb cables
3G iPods require the 12V DC output of a Firewire cable; newer iPods can accept the lower voltage of USB (5V DC). This is why charging a 3G iPod is Firewire only.
Note that the newest iPods (5G & Nano) can charge via Firewire, but cannot sync via Firewire.
