Another newsreport specified the particular models that caused the fires. Quote:

The ministry said the incidents were caused by four models -- MA004J/A, MA005J/A, MA099J/A and MA107J/A -- of which 1.81 million units were sold between September 2005 and September 2006 in Japan.

It's good that they're making people aware of this. Better safe than sorry.

According to Apple, "batteries from a single supplier are to blame for the meltdown of some models of its tiny iPod Nano digital music player."

It's so funny how the article from Japan cited the incidence of iPods burning due to batteries and the abovementioned article (which originated in Seattle) mentioned in the 5th paragraph how "Millions of lithium-ion laptop batteries made by Sony for Apple, Dell Inc., Lenovo Inc. and other PC makers were recalled in 2006 and 2007 after it was discovered that they could overheat and ignite." In the 6th paragraph, they declined to divulge the name of the supplier but the statement in the previous paragraph seemed like an attempt at considering Sony as a potential supplier.
