A word of advice: (at least for AOL in the UK)

AOL would give out free CDs to be able to set-up AOL on your system and be able to use unlimited dial-up free for up to two months as long as you give your credit card information. And for most of the students staying at the dorms this became a reasonable option since it takes quite some time to install broadband connections here. For whatever reason I really don't know.

I availed of this promo from AOL and I tried cancelling my application through email and through phone and it took almost 10 working days to do that. I almost didn't reach my deadline. Not to mention it was impossible to get in touch with their toll-free cancellation hotline. I would leave the phone on for about an hour and just listen to the crappy music they make you listen to while you wait for the next available operator.

Also, some people in the dorms were even sent free ADSL modems and being charged for their internet connections even if they clearly stated that they were just trying to avail of the free dial-up offer. As a compromise, they would get charged for two months worth of ADSL and thus terminating the 12-month contract they "apparently" availed of when using the free trial dial-up service.

My point being, AOL may have these offers and all, but they make it extremely difficult to cancel the service in the event you choose to.
