    Default iTunes erasing iPod contents

Hey guys, my boyfriend's copy of iTunes has been acting up on him a lot, and yesterday it just erased everything in his iPod! I'm hoping that maybe anyone could help with the problem? Here was his whole rant from an iChat conversation :P

"Why would itunes erase an ipod, when specifically set to not update automatically, when itunes is updated (to 4.7)?

i made sure to repair permissions before updating itunes, and then updating permissions after itunes was updated to 4.7.

then i plug in my ipod as usual just to charge its battery, i did not make any changes to ipod's settings in itunes, they were left at "update playlists manually" (or however it's listed)

once it was fully charged, i unmounted the ipod through itunes, clicked on the eject button next to the ipod listing in itunes, it took a few seconds, and then when it was fully unmounted (ipod icon no longher in itunes or on the desktop), i close itunes, and shut down my computer then i unplug my ipod to take with me

next thing i know, the ipod has no playlists, no songs! what gives? why would it erase everything when i didn't do anything except update it?"

umm, did he check if the do not disconnect icon was no longer displayed on his ipod before he unplugged his ipod? in my case, it takes a few seconds after the ipod icon has disappeared from both itunes and the desktop before the do not disconnect icon disappears from the ipod. i always wait for that before disconnecting my ipod.

Yup, he did! He's one of the most OC people I know. Sometimes he even waits a full minute before disconnecting it!

Maybe it would be helpful to add that problems with his itunes seem to have started when he installed ichatstatus and that his library would always corrupt, and be saved as "damaged"

whatever's causing his library to corrupt might also be causing his pod to erase too.

Perhaps he has fallen victim to the mysterious iPod "bug" that has struck quite a few people here. Best to do a restore factory defaults via the iPod software before loading songs on a brand new iPod.
