ipod question
hi guys,
this might be a stupid question.... so please bear with me....
i have a 3rd gen 20G ipod and my sister has an ipod mini and now, we are thinking of getting our dad a shuffle for his birthday.
each of us has our own type of music in our itunes but we want to put in the music for my dad's shuffle together (collaborative effort and best of each, i guess ;-)
my question is: my sister uses a pc and i have a mac. can we sync the shuffle to our two different computers?

it can be done. i haven't tried it, but this is what i would do.
1. Rip all the songs on the Mac.
2. Rip all the songs on the PC, but add the ripped songs from the Mac.
3. Synch iPod shuffle to Mac.
4. Disconnect.
5. Synch iPod shuffle to PC, retaining the songs from the Mac.
6. Give iPod.
Why? If you connect the iPod to your PC and the iTunes on PC does not have the songs that were synched from the mac, it will disappear like thin air.
someone please correct me if I am wrong.

related question too...
I have a friend who also owns an iPod. When he saw my playlists in iTunes, he asked me if he could copy some of them to his iTunes. Being the not-so-good friend that I am, I gave him my seat and told him to do it himself.
:P When I come back, he was frowning. He now has a new set of songs and playlists...as in new... 'coz his old list and playlists have beenoverwritten.
So my quetion is: Can an iPod be connected to two or more computers with the intention of adding songs to your collection? Or, is such an action illegal?

I think it's ok unless you got your music from an online store which specifically gives a limit as to how many times you can copy the purchased material. I read somewhere that with iTunes, you can copy and burn your music as much as you want. The same goes if you ripped your music from a cd in your collection.

technically you can do it, but you cant use the ipod to transfer the music from 1 computer to another coz everytime the ipod syncs (meaning add what isnt on the ipod & delete what isnt on the computer) w the computer it completely removes what is not on the host computer.
you can do this by copying songs manually using ( flash base cards ) then put them on the other computer. but you should only do this if they are both your computer(you own the right for the music). doing it for someone else is another thing (its illegal). so ones you have copied the music on the computer just make a playlist then just check that playlist to be copied on the shuffle. so it wont copy everything from your library. then just remove the playlist when you have done updating the shuffle. but the thing is when your dad requests a new playlist you have to do the same thing again.
so basically it can be connected to 2 computers but whats the point if both computers should have the same content to be able to sync properly other wise it will erase or add what ever is on the ipod & on the 2nd computer. so i guess you can just copy what ever is on the 2nd computer to the 1st computer to make it easier for you.

thanks to everyone for sharing their help and advise!
just want to clarify that the songs on my itunes and the songs on my sister's itunes are all from cds we have bought legit
i think that the easiest (maybe even the best) solution is to:
- convert my dad to become a mac user ( a nice powerbook maybe...) so he can make his own itunes library with his music or...
- teach him how to use itunes so he can copy his cd collection to his current PC and again, make his own itunes library...
thanks again for the help!

There are several software utilities that can do this such at iPod2mac and iPod rip. Try searching for them on Version Tracker.
