Re: ipod poses danger???
This is just circumstantial and doesn't necessarily mean that iPods causes more trouble than other gadgets. It's like the same thing about keeping away from landlines phones during thunderstorms.
It is clear from the article that the wires plus combination of sweat added more harm but the iPod didn't increase the chance of being hit.
Note that getting hit by a thunderstorm is harmful enough that you don't need an ipod to have the severe burns.
It's a sensationalized news, IMO.

If the mp3 player was a zune or zen, I wonder if the report would have garnered the same attention. ditto on the obvious sensationlized news
Freak accident. Nothing an iSkin can't solve.

Re: ipod poses danger???
prue_halliwel, it's only circumstantial and there is no gadget that would increase your chance of getting hit by lightning.
Well if you're wired when hit by one, you get more harm than one who is not wired.
The reason why iPod was in the news because more people are using it for their mp3 player so i guess there is a small chance that zune would land in the news though.

Electricity always chooses the path of least resistance. Humans - and humans with wires trailing vertically on their bodies (i.e. earbuds) - are excellent conductors, and in this respect make excellent lightning rods.
Yes, you are more likely to be struck by lightning if you have electronics and metal on you, and yes, if you do get struck with such items on your person, you're more likely to suffer great injury than without. It is not, however, relevant what brand of electronic device you have on you.

Amen! i think the fact that ipods are the most popular mp3 players around, by far, is the only reason why they chose to report it as they did..and making this fallacy of ipod users most likely being struck by lightning is just being pinoy. parang "ate, may colgate ba kayo?"

Re: ipod poses danger???
Even if you have no metal on you, a several thousand volt lightning should surely fry the hell out of you!
and that's if you are the most 'charged' person under a thunderstorm, then you're surely become a biological lightning rod

I heard it happened while he was mowing his lawn. Now that's a big conductor that probably passed on to the wires of his earphones. Did you see his injuries? It was bad. Stay clear of open spaces to be safe.
