It's OK to keep your 'pod plugged in all the time. When the iPod battery is fully charged, the battery goes into trickle charge and merely 'tops up' the power that is lost over time… as you know, any rechargeable battery loses power eventually even if unused.

I have a first gen. Nano for 3 years now. For around 2 years I use it and then after it goes directly to the docking/charging station which is also my speaker. No problem so far, the battery is not 100% for sure but I can still use it for around 1 hour straight.

i still have my first gen nano, too and i've been using it the same time as yours, 3 years; however, i can still use it overnight. i also use it directly on my dock speakers but sometimes i use the hamburger speaker for the kids and the battery lasts overnight.
