iPod formatting question (windows , mac)
searched, but could not find!
i formatted an iPod photo and updated it to the latest firmware on a windows xp machine. i was able to consolidate my entire library of music and photos.
when i plugged it into my book, the iPod Photo was read as an external drive and not as an iPod. does this have something to do with formatting it through windows?
itunes (mac) cannot detect the iPod but itunes (windows) can.
i also heard that this unrecognized iPod may be caused by not updating my OSX? looking for some explanations lang. thanks in advance

This did not happen with my windows formatted 4Gen Ipod nor with my friends ipod mini. I'm sorry Jayvee if I don't have answers for you. May I just suggest that you trot over to www.ipodlounge.com that's my favorite place to go for everything and anything to do with the iPod.
By the way are you reviewing the iPod photo in M-PH soon? Can't wait.

i trotted over to ipod lounge before posting here. there were some solutions (like an OSX update) ... i came from a clean wipe of my HD so im doing stuff from scratch and the big patch is overwhelming for dial up. will update as soon as i have broadband access. nonetheless, i was looking for other opinions too
this is after all, a friendly mac help community
and as for reviewing it for a magazine .. right now i wish i wasnt reviewing it for anything so that i could keep it ... mine ... all mine... my precious ...i hope they forget they lent it to me.
.. lent what? they never lent me anything .. no way?!

Okay. Will try some research in the morning. Must get some sleep. I'm confident though that some of our gurus here at just sleeping. Maybe you'll have an answer in the morning.

hehe. i like the iPod Photo. though i wish it could "smart compress" even really huge images instead of generating a smaller size thumbnail copy. that would really be a showcase of power.
i wanted to do that windows formatting experiment when i could have done it with the Mac. i dont know if its because i enjoy tweaking or if i just like giving myself a hard time.
i can bring it to the wala lang alabang meeting for those who havent seen it yet. good night.

Got a 60GB iPod photo today. I was hoping to use it also as a mobile hard disk. Makes sense to have it Windows formatted so that I can transfer files to and from Windows PCs. I have already downloaded the latest ipod updater so that my new iPod will be up to date but before I do just that I would like to ask everybody here how their iPods are formatted.
Does anybody know the pros and cons of having it Mac or Windows formatted?
EDIT: I read somewhere that Mac iPod's drive is formatted as a Mac OS Hierarchical File System Extended (HFS+) volume while the Windows iPod bears a hard drive formatted as a FAT32 volume. Does anyone know the difference between both?

don't quote me on this but if i remember correctly you can't use a windows formatted ipod on a mac. i think it needs to be formatted for one OS. at least for it to be used with itunes.

I had an iPod that I sold to a PC user friend and since I had already formatted it to work with my Mac he couldn't sync it with his PC. He had to reformat the iPod before he got it to sync with his PC.

Apple has an FAQ on this matter though its a bit more confusing. Hope this helps.
