I'm on the road quite a bit and need quick, fast access to the internet, therefore, 3G works much better for me than EDGE. And yeah, I have good 3G coverage in the areas I frequently travel to.

yes aside from gadget lust and having money to burn and it being available just on the corner store, there is no real value in upgrading, come on its just a software upgrade + gps, thats about it, oh yeah 3g so thats another baseband / radio update. plus of course thinner form factor and the color and yeah microsoft exchange. aside from that nothing really new, if i were somewhere else with my 1st gen iphone, i wouldnt go and get a new one, i can upgrade my firmware to the latest version then do a jailbreak etc to get my settings back. so yes its not worth it, especially if the data plan is not good, in vancouver rogers is offering about 30 bucks for a 6gb monthly data plan, so all in all with the visual voicemail its about 80$ per month for 3 years and then a 500$ service charge in case you try to get out of your plan.
anyway, the app store is cool, and the gps is cool too. but no, dont get one if you already have the 1st gen. =) its just not practical

crappy photos taken by my 1st gen iphone. here in vancouver, people were lining up since thursday night, and ordering pizza on the line up, i should have taken a photo of that, that would be interesting ^^. in the end its just another phone guys, in 3 months there will be a new one, with dual camera for video conferencing and maybe 5mp, with flash, and 32gb.. oh and half the price. it never ends. steve jobs is out there saying "hmmm, another 6 million iphone sales in one month, im gonna go buy myself a planet this time" har har

I'd still get one though. Even if i already have the 1st gen. He k I'd even get the next one. Gawin ko nalng sya collection. Di ko kaya mG collect mbp or iMacs, so id settle for the iPhone. Hehehe
Seriously, I'd get one but maybe not now. Especially because you cant buy it without getting a plan.

P.S. Hong Kong stocks are NOT locked, I'm able to switch to my other Smartone SIM card... just need to reactivate using iTunes 7.7 whenever you switch and update the 3G cellular data network APN.

Hmmm, I dunno how to answer this... but the answer is Yes and No...
Yes, you can buy one and take it to Manila (theoretically, since it's not locked)... No, you can't just buy one coz you will need to subscribe and activate it on the spot at the shop (provided that they have one in stock, but shipment is arriving next week they say).
As I've indicated in another thread, you will need to bring your 'proof of residence' here in HKG and pay with a valid local credit card...
I've seen "water goods" in the grey market in Mong Kok that are local HKG stocks... they range for HKD10 - 18k. Basically the full price of the 24 months subscription + iPhone 3G + profit.
Me and my friends were jokingly saying:... we can subscribe to the cheapest package and break the contract to pay for the full price that adds up to HKD8 - 9k + penalty and still be cheaper than the grey market.
3HK is well-known for crappy reception and unfriendly service. This is the main reason most of my friends are hesitating in getting one.
