Default iPhone 3G data charging: what's the real deal?

Sorry if I had to create a separate thread regarding this but I believe it is a pressing concern. Feel free to merge this with the other 3G threads if you feel the need to.

A warning on iPhone 3G early adopters tomorrow:

An update from iTunes came up asking us to update carrier settings for Globe. Surprisingly, this included the 1st Gen iPhones. Doblezeta took the plunge and guess what? It locked the editing of APN which means that we cannot turn off 3G/Edge data. Even the previous hacks won't work. So it seems Globe did not address the issue but worsened it. Looks like they really want us to incur enormous bills on our first month. I'll pass by the launch tomorrow and try to ask Globe CSRs regarding this. To date, I believe this is the most pressing issue we have to deal with. I hope Globe has an answer to that.

Too bad philmuggers and appleites are just a minority there who know of this issue. It seems Globe is banking on milking the thousands of "uninformed" iPhone 3G enthusiasts who are just too eager to get the iPhone 3G tomorrow.

I've read that thread in applei. Globe may probably have the same issue with AT&T on the enormous roaming charges on one of the customers in the early weeks of the iPhone 1st gen release. If this happens, it will be mayhem for the CSRs after the first bill comes in.

Thank you very much for the information sir. I worry about those people who are unaware of this.

I suppose i'll be switching sim cards and use my current prepaid sim for my iPhone so I can at least control the amount I'm spending in some way. My current phone can have the new line I applied that was meant for my iPhone :slanted:

mmm perhaps you should wait for the charging guidelines that goes with every line/phone, before concluding anything

Just an update on this Globe data issue.

Restoring to a 2.0.1 CFW and then SSHing the 'fix' enabled me again to edit the APN and hence turn off EDGE.

But I'm staying away from updating my Carrier Settings from now on.

For those using Globe on firmware 2.0+, I would suggest staying away from the updates to carrier settings nalang. If it aint broke, don't break it.
