how would you know if an iphone is Jailbroken or officially unlock?

just got my iphone and i wanted to update it to 2.2, but im scared because i dont know if my iphone is Jailbroken or officially unlock. please help.

Just for reference, consult the following Apple Support Page to find out where officially unlocked iPhone 3G can be found:

A quick look thru the chart shows the following countries have iPhones that aren't locked to the mobile service provider:

Belgium, Czech Republic, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Luxembourg, Macau, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia (Orange), South Africa, Taiwan, & Turkey (TurkCell).

Also, a number of national carriers allow official unlocking from the carrier (probably after a few months of service); Globe & AT&T don't allow such official unlocking.

first of all I would never buy any apple product or a mobile phone thats as expensive or as complex as an iphone in greenhills except if its from digiwalker machine or digiwalker.

if its from anywhere else than those places in greenhills... I DOUBT its officially unlocked... probably jailbroken

If it points you in US then it's not officially unlocked. But don't worry, dev team's soft unlock is coming this new year's eve!

if the part numbers point to US, then its an AT&T locked phone. All US sourced (AT&T) iPhone 3Gs are locked so its not an Official Unlocked iPhone 3G.

There are alot of iPhone 3Gs being sold in the market right now that are "unlocked kuno".

Here are some tips on how to check if its an Official Legit Unlocked iPhone 3G vs. Fake Unlocked iPhone 3G:

Official Legitimate Unlocked= OL
Faked Unlocked= FU

1) Most OL units have a taller box. Its the tallest box among all iPhones (taller than even the iPhone Classic box)
2) Most FU units now will have the 2.11 baseband. An OL unit on 2.2 should be working fine on the 2.28 baseband.
3) Some FU units will loose the data icon when you turn "Data Roaming" off. Check this when window shopping for an iPhone 3G

That is definitely unofficially unlock iphone because in US, AT&T is the sole carrier and they don't unlock iphones.

Check also the IMEI number on the sim tray if it matches the IMEI in Settings-General-About. If that didn't match it's an authorized unlock.
