How to record and apply your own ringtone
I'm sure one day, there will be a simpler, more direct way to record your own ringtone, but for now, this is the simplest way I can find.
1. Use AppTap to install VoiceNotes
2. Launch VoiceNotes (VNotes) and record the audio (i.e. your son saying the words "answer the damn phone1")
3. tap on the new recording and select Send to Email
4. Compose and send an email with the attached file to yourself.
5. Go to your computer and download that mail
6. drag the attached .amr file into your desktop
7. open that file with QuickTime
8. Export (Apple E) the file using the preset "movie to iPhone" into your desktop (requires QT Pro)
9. locate the newly exported file and rename the extension from .m4v to .m4a
10. open that newly renamed file in QT to make sure it works
11. Use Cyberduck (or any other SFTP app, or iPhone file browser) to copy that file into the /Library/Ringtones folder
12. Enjoy your new ringtone!
Sounds tedious, doesn't it? But believe me, it's super simple. I just did it and it took just a few minutes.

Nice work elbert!
Having said that, you can skip steps 1-8 by simply recording using your Mac's built-in microphone. :-)
Garageband should work fine. Save directly to AAC. From there you an SSH it as per elbert or use MakeiPhoneRingtone.
Just as another possible simple & direct way. :-)
