Default Help! will a iPod USB Charger charge my 3rd gen ipod?

just wondering if this is possible to charge a 3rd gen ipod with a usb ipod power adapter.

    i currently have a 3rd gen 15gb, with no FW charger/cable.
I was wondering if i can buy a usb chager to serve both this and my 2nd gen mini.

As far as im concerned, 3rd gen ipods only charge via FW and not via USB. but checked the apple site and it says that the usb charger is "Compatible with iPod shuffle and iPod models with dock connector. "

well then can it charge the 3rd gen ipods?
    anyone have tested this?

    Thanks for any help.

Haven't tried this myself since I have a 4G, but based on some of my previous readings (since I can't get my old external HD Enclosure to work on my new AlBook) here's what I found:

    - USB 2.0 Standard voltage specification is 5Volts.
    - Some manufacturers disregard the spec. creating 6-7 Volt USB ports. This is the reason why some external HDD enclosures with 6-8 volt requirements work on some machines and not on others.
    - Apple follows the USB 2.0 spec. to the letter. This is why MOST USB 2 enclosures don't work with Macs on a single USB connection alone (usually augmented by another usb connector).
    - 3G iPod power rating is somewhere between 7.5 to 10 Volts. This is why charging will NOT work on a standard, powered USB 2.0 port (or even non-standard ones for that matter).

Based on this, it's doubtful that the iPod USB charger will work for your 3G iPod because Apple is a stickler for rules -- so it'll probably have a 5 volt USB port.

Then again, I'm sure this can quickly be settled by someone from Apple. Anyone here from the board?
