Default HELP! Ipod shuffle wont mount.

    Did anyone encounter this problem?
I have a 1 gig shuffle and allocated 256 memory for flash drive.
I used it last night with MS word and when I inserted it again this AM it noted Mac OS X cant mount the disk. it cant identfiy removable device.

I am getting frantic since my final report paper is ONLY stored there.

    Any suggestions?
I made a disk utility repair permission on my system (not the shuffle) and then restarted but still the same.

first, to try and save your file, try mounting the shuffle in any other fairly new computer with a USB port, windows or mac. (it's in PC format so should also mount on PCs without any problem). once your file is copied, start troubleshooting--such as by trying to run the latest ipod updater on it.

    Hi prof,
After getting the full story from my gf, she accessed the ipod flash disk mode in winXP. Since the itunes software tried to open and access the internet, Zonealarm (firewall software) asked permission to have itunes access the net. She clicked NO and itunes did not load and unfortunately also did not load the shuffle.
Then she noticed she cant get through the files. So she tried in the ibook and same problem.

It seems the data is all gone. Now I have to know if there is a way to recover it? Both OS asks if I want to format it.

Try the built in Disk Utillity. If it fails maybe Disk Warrior or Techtool Pro would do it.

am no ipod expert, but i strongly suspect your file's still there. from my experience (just mac, not PC), itunes HAS to mount for the ipod itself to be recognized. it will appear in both itunes and on the desktop--and you can then access your files through the desktop-mounted image.

maybe you could try letting it connect to the internet just so itunes could mount. btw, i'm using a shuffle, too.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

Unfortunately, I have to use a winXP data recovery data software that actually saw the contents of the shuffle on each respective sector. Noted it was in Fat12? I wonder why.
Anyway, since it is a demo copy I cant use it to fully restore the lost file BUT I was able to read the lost sectors.
So I just had to print the text in the lost sectors on the view log of the software and just had to retype it.

Better to retype than to recompose.

Then I had to use the updater to make the shuffle usable again.

Is this really a potential problem if you use the shuffle on both platforms (as a flash disk)?

    i have a similar problem.
my 1st gen 1gig ipod shuffle mounts on my desktop, but wont mount in itunes. i have to use the ipod reset utility (which erases all the files) to get it to mount on itunes. i've had this problem for the past two weeks. is my shuffle dying?
I took the road less travelled by, and that has made all the difference. ~Robert Frost
