Generic MP3 USB Power Adapter for an iPod?

I've searched the threads about this and I can't seem to find if it is safe to use a generic black mp3 usb power adapter (the ones that come with mp3 players in Quiapo and also being sold now at CDR-King for Php100) with an iPod, particularly, a nano 2nd gen, a nano 3rd gen, and an ipod touch.

Will it provide enough power to charge and what will be the time penalties for using this charger? (time to full charge compared to an original apple usb power adapter) Will it not destroy the ipod?

I'm looking into this option since most ipods now only have a usb cable for charging, with no power adapter, and for only Php100 or less (I have them lying around here, so its free), I get to charge an ipod with this small footprint usb power adapter. Pardon for penny pinching but we all do need to save every now and then (or as often as we could) and I have this generic mp3 usb charger just around here with no use...

Please advise, both pros and cons... Thanks! =)

Just tried it right now but I can't confirm if its charging. The moment the ipod is connected to the cable (generic mp3 power adapter already plugged), the screen lights up, then the power icon blinks green and then without green, with a flash symbol over the icon. But after a while, the screen goes blank as if in sleep mode... Will have to drain the battery first I guess to confirm.

Anyone else with experiments like these? =)

an Apple USB power adapter for iPod second hand costs about 1000php, generic chargers with cable 350-500php. But generic mp3 usb power adapter (without the cable) sells for 100php at CD-R king and even less in Quiapo... =)

Any successful generic mp3 power adapter charging of your ipods? =)

i would definitely buy "branded" usb chargers over those generic ones IMHO i think they are better regulated. try capdase or the other "branded" ones

An Apple Authorized reseller in Cebu sells Generic Ipod USB Power Adapter but they do not recommend it as it may cause you serious problems in the near future. I bought my USB Power Adapter at Php 2,200 and it comes with a year warranty. I spotted another store selling it for just 1,700 but it only offers just a week warranty. I've tried generic ones but the experience wasn't really desirable. Generic ones heat up like hell while original ones don't even heat up that much. If I were you I won't trade money for safety. Get the original ones!

My office mate uses the one that cost around 6-7 hundred pesos square type that comes in different colors. He uses it in the office as an alternate charger. So far its doing fine.

But I also agree if you have the budget, go for the original one . Better safe than sorry.

Are the Apple usb adaptors standard for all ipods? Will it work for my ipod touch?

Yes. I actually got the Original USB Power Adapter for my iPod Touch. The generic one hardly charges my Touch. Geeez!
