    Default Garageband 2

Anyone else looking forward to the new release of Apple's entry-level music production software?

It sports really cool new features.. for me I love the 8-track recording, notation, and its 'freeze'-like capability...

Just wondering, but how would you record 8 instruments at the same time if most Macs only have one audio input?

i wondered about this too, especially during the Macworld demo. How did the guy playing guitar, and i could hear his guitar, sing at the same time, without the vocal track picking up some of the guitar sound? This was my problem when i first recorded in garageband, forgetting to turn off the sound on my instrument track.

I can understand how it is possible to record up to 8 MIDI instruments simultaneously via USB, or 7 MIDI instruments together on headphones recorded with 1 voice recording.

    Default USB/Firewire Audio Interface

You would need something like this:

    Presonus Firepod

    M-audio Firewire 1814

I wonder if the rumoured Garageband breakout box codenamed Asteroid looks something like this. GB is a great cost effective recording platform for bands. But for me, it's real beauty is for a single musician to be able to record a song all by himself playing all the instruments. It's great for composers to be able to write and produce an entire album by himself for a measley PhP 3500 for the iLife suite. Given you already own a Mac that is. Its sad Apple did not include an audio in port for the Mac mini. I guess that's why they're developing Asteriod.

If I remember correctly, John Mayer's guitar wasn't miked up, it probably had onboard pickups going directly to the mixer. At least it would seem that way, because I don't remember seeing a microphone pointed at his acoustic guitar.

john mayer's guitar had its own set of pick ups he uses an acoustic-electric concert guitar. the two other microphones (john's and his backup singer / bassist) were another set and the bass, a separate set. i think there were percussions too.

I now have ilife 5 and I have started to look into garageband 2 and was looking forward to the music notation that Jobs talked about in his keynote. What I've found out so far is that it only works with software instruments. I was really hoping that I could simply play my digital piano and garageband would be able to do the notes for me. I bought separately last year, Finale Print Music which I have tried on what they call hyperscribe which is a music notation software. You connect your digital instrument to your mac, switch on hyperscribe and off you go. To the digital music gurus, do I have garageband figured out wrong? All I've done with garageband so far is connect to my piano, play a song and basically record in garageband. Subsequently I exported it into my itunes and then converted into an mp3 file and loaded it into my ipod. I am virtually zero on music notation but recently have composed a few religious songs for my choir in church and wanted so much to be able to notate those songs. Can anyone tell me if garageband 2 can do this? thanks
