is the dock necessary?

Hi. I'm thinking of buying a 4th gen, 20GB iPod. This question may seem stupid but is a dock necessary? And while we're at it, what are other necessary peripherals? Just so I could budget my moolah.

I find my dock indispensable because it provides a stand for my pod at home that's connected to my stereo (via line out) and a power supply. A line out is nice to have since it consumes less battery when connected to an external sound system. If you don't need a stand but would like a line out check out the PocketDock. It's definitely more portable.

I'm not sure if a case constitutes a peripheral but I consider it a must have.

I, too, find the dock useful. I keep it permanently connected to my stereo. When I get home, I just pop it straight into the dock for charging, or continuing the last song I was listening to in the car (lest I suffer from the dreaded LSS).

I agree with mgd. A case is absolutely essential.

I find my iTrip a handy peripheral too.

Thanks for the input. I probably should be getting one as the 20GB does not come with a dock.

mmm.... i just have my 4th gen 20gb ipod last nov 15th... so far, for me a case is more essential than the dock. iTrip is even more essential than the dock.

if you want a beautiful stand and conveniently update your ipod plus if you want to hear your songs using your available speakers then you may want to have a dock.

a case is more important because the ipod scratches so easily. and because i'm still saving up for the case i want; i'm using the socks that are for cellphones.

i suggest if you have a ready budget, you must buy the itrip for you to hear the songs in your ipod through you radio. if you already have a nice sound system at home itrip will definitely save you a lot of money. you won't have to buy those expensive speakers anymore.

but a case is very essential.

I bought a 4th gen 20 gig iPod, and I never got a dock... I seem to be doing ok without it though :P

I think for me, it's a case of not missing what you never had :blush:

i've always wanted a dock for my 15GB ipod... but their too expensive for the first hand ones... case is a must (even had 2 major incidents that my ipod fell quite a height and was saved not only by the speck skin but by my left foot too, hehe :lol ANYWAYS.... itrip, that comes pretty much later on in my wish list
