Default DFU Mode on unibody Macs

Yesterday, I accidentally unplugged an iPhone in the middle of a 2.2 update process. I guess I screwed it up badly because I couldn't get iTunes to recognize the iPhone after that. I decided to do a full restore from DFU mode (a mode most hackers need the phone to be on when modifying the iPhone). Even in DFU mode, iTunes would still not recognize the iPhone.

After Googling, I learned that the issue affects all unibody Macs.

dpblezeta suggested I try using a USB hub, since the issue is related to the USB ports of the new unibody models having too high a voltage, and therefore affecting the ability of iTunes to recognize a DFU mode iPhone.

Well, it worked. Good thing I had one (thanks to my soon-t0-be-on-sale Macbook Air).

    Thanks doblezeta!

this is a good head's up...
i'm reading up on iphone info coz now that i have my macbook im planning to get an iphone as well...

am i correct to say that as long as DFU mode is accessible, the iphone can be repaired?
is there a limit to the "repair" that one can do?

    thanks in advance!

here's another fix but involves modifying the osx.

the original IOUSBFamily.kext came from my Mac running on 10.5.5, DFU tested and working.

    - download this file and place it to your download folder. if browser is safari, itll be in the Downloads folder automatically..

(copy paste the bold text in the terminal window)

    - fire up terminal and type sudo -s (enter your password)
    - rm -r /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext (this will delete the original file so i suggest you back it up first)
    - mv /Users/User/Downloads/IOUSBFamily.kext /System/Library/Extensions (replace user (text in red) w your macs username)
    - sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext
    - sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext
    - rm /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
    - as an extra precation you can run disk utility and repair permission (optional)
    - reboot

now you can DFU on mac osx 10.5.5/6 unibody or not.. enjoy

    Hello Elbert,

Just curious about your Macbook Air? are u selling it bec you have purchase the new MB-UB and its an extra computer for u right now, or do u find the air too limiting because of its missing ports and what not.

just asking because my next buy would probably b the Air, my MBP is more for my desktop kc, my only complain is that the Air's HD is still to small, must wait for a bigger SSD drive to come out.

other than that i find it to be what i need out on the field, no extra borloloy just the basic and full size KB & screen, just want to know how are you handling it right now with both.
