But you could still skip songs/tunes by tapping twice the pendant-like button with the bundled earphones without opening the device at all. Or simply access the iPod by tapping the home button twice even in hibernate mode.

I charge mine every morning or lunch time leaving it on overnight. The usage meter sometimes reaches 26 hours standby time. I use my iphone as my primary phone so i text around an average of 150 per day and around 15 to 20 minutes call. Wifi usage is around 1 to 2 hours.
i read somewhere that you should not fear changing the battery because newer batteries like in the iphone has "no memory effect" meaning that if you charge it every now and then it won't do damage to the battery In fact if you let your battery run out of juice or charge it when you already recieve the low bat warning it could probably do more damage than charging it every now and then. The advice is to charge it when it is around 50 % discharged already, or if you have the chance to plug it in.
I also believe ( somebody correct me if I'm wrong) the battery in the iPhone/ iPod touch/new nano and shuffle will last much longer because there are no more hard disk inside, its using flash memory that is why the capacity is only up to a few gigs 8/4g. No mechanical parts means more battery life.
You can also adjust the settings for the screen brightness and the time out. It will significantly improve battery life.
