Default Changing destination drive for iTunes

If I get an external firewire HD and want to start saving my iTunes-ripped files to it instead of my internal HD. How do I make the external HD the destination drive for iTunes?

On your Preferences, TJ. Go to Advanced. Then just click on Change... set your external firewire HD as the location of your new iTunes folder.

TJ, make sure your external drive has an available FW port. Otherwise, you might not be able to manage your iTunes library with your iPod directly.

That's right, TJ. You need to daisy chain your iPod to your external HD. Of course, you could always get a dual firewire-usb2.2 enclosure for your external drive- use the firewire for the ipod, and usb for your external hd. I have an 80GB Seagate, 7200 rpm 3.5", and an enclosure with dual firewire-usb2.2 out. I assembled it myself(very easy). I have been storing my videos in it, (use it as my scratch disk for FCPHD) some pictures, and music. So far, it has been doing quite well.

Cost me around 8k. Cheap lang, no?

Thanks guys, I didn't think about the FW port for the external drive. I thought I'd still connect my iPod directly to the PBook. So the iPod should be connected directly to the source of the files?

Al, 8k sounds good! I'll be asking you about it during the Philmug Photgraphy Meeting this coming Wednesday.

A similar setup will only set you back around P7K now. P2,800 for the FW400/USB 2.0 combo enclosure and P4,200 for the 80GB hard drive. :-)

    Hey, Henjie,

Where can I get the components and how do you do this? Thanks.

PC Express sells 80GB Seagate and Maxtor hard drives (7200rpm) for P4,150 each. Then buy an external 3.5" Firewire enclosure for around P2,500 or less from Virra Mall computer shops. Make sure you're getting a Firewire enclosure, not a USB 2.0 unit. An enclosure using the Oxford 911 chipset is also recommended (discussion about this available here).

Install the hard drive inside the Firewire enclosure (pretty straightforward procedure) and you're good to go. Much cheaper than pre-built external drives from LaCie, OWC, EZQuest, Iomega, etc. etc. You can even build your own 120GB external Firewire hard drive for less than P8K (P2.5K for the enclosure, P5.3K for a 120GB Seagate hard drive from PCX). ;-)

Daisy chaining an iPod to a powered external FW hard disc enclosure still wont charge it.
