Bose Sound Dock - iPhone Killer
You already know how this story ends--what's interesting is how it got be that way...
My lovely wife gave me an iPhone as a (very early) Christmas present--I got it late October--1.0.2, hacked and ready. She got it from the US, so purchase price, esp. compared against GH prices, was not so bad.
Fast forward to December 15, and I woke up bright and early for the Microwarehouse sale. Got there a little before 7am (I live nearby), despite my missing the alarm (ironically set on my iPhone--talk about self-preservation). Managed to get into first 10 (#7!) when I arrived in Silver City, went back home to look up some things and promptly added a Macbook to my to-buy list.
Got back to Silver City around 11.30AM, met up with some like-minded fellows from work, and got a peep at their list. Interestingly, saw that there were two Bose Sound Docks on the pricelist--interesting. Put that as #1 on top of my list--the Macbooks weren't looking too hot esp. given today's exchange rate.
12.15pm--they finally let the first 30 in. I rushed to the Mac area to get a mini and iMac that a friend was interested in, then went to the speaker area and asked about the Sound Docks--they weren't out yet--and could I wait until they got out? (Sign #2)
Went around and got a bunch of other stuff, came back and the lady manning the speaker area told me the Sound Dock was coming right up. They only had the Sound Dock in black (I was gunning for white to match my wife's iPod--Sign #3), but after some thought, hey black would look good with my iPhone(!). They handed me the SoundDock in the box, and at that point I had three heavy boxes with me. I put the mini and iMac with the Sound Dock box on top down by the testing area and told the guy there to watch it for me--I wanted to check out the nano accessories. When I came back, someone was looking at the Sound Dock--about to grab it. The guy at the testing area said it was mine (Sign #4).
While walking around the sale area, people kept asking me where I got the Sound Dock, and trying to be helpful I told them they had probably run out at that point (given there were only 2 on the list). Got glaring stares (you lucky bastard) and got a tingling sensation that the fateful hand of karma would come slamming down on me soon (Sign #5).
Paid for my stuff, hung around outside where I could hear comments like "Hey they have Sound Docks on sale." Friends were telling me I got a deal. Left around 1.30PM--content, happy, yet having having that sticky, tingling sensation.
Ran some errands, got back home around 3pm, promptly setup the Sound Dock by our bed side, plugged my wife's iPod in with "her" music in it, and appreciated the rich deep sound. Hey, I bet the Dock would sound way better with my music on it--got the iPhone, plugged it in, and watched the screen rez out like a bad wipe. Pulled it out quickly, noted that it got hung up, did a reset, prayed to the tech gods, and got it up and running.
Ran to my kids' nearby Christmas party, and noticed that my iPhone was getting warm. Got back home 6pm, battery was at 10%, plugged in the sync cable, and almost threw the phone to floor when the battery heated up faster than the right colegiala in the backseat of a car. Screen did a few backflips, then the thing gave up its ghost.
Did some googling--and after picking the right key words - Bose - Sound - Dock - Fried - Iphone--finally was able to verify that no, they weren't compatible like all the 9,999 other posts said.
So, anyone need an iPhone for spare parts? Screen is pristine, and I have all the accessories in the box.

Thing is--it was only a matter of time before I plugged it in. Quick googling shows them to be compatible--I can only comfort myself with the knowledge that I now have a reason to buy the 3G version when it comes out :-)

holy *%#<>! I have the Bose sound dock. Also the iPhone. Thanks for the warning. What about the iPod touch? I also have it. I tried it once with the sound dock. Went fine but I'm never trying it again. I aso tried the iPhone and the touch with the generic iPod interface for the car. iPhone didn't work but it charged. Touch works fine. Sorry to hear about your iPhone.

I used the first version of the Sound Dock--the newer version ***seems*** to work fine but I wouldn't bet your iPhone on it
There are also posts elsewhere about iPod classics dying on the original Sound Dock. Not sure about the Touch--again I wouldn't bet on it.
