    Apple Presents iPod
Ultra-Portable MP3 Music Player Puts 1,000 Songs in Your Pocket

    CUPERTINO, California—October 23, 2001
Apple® today introduced iPod™, a breakthrough MP3 music player that packs up to 1,000 CD-quality songs into an ultra-portable, 6.5 ounce design that fits in your pocket. iPod combines a major advance in portable music device design with Apple’s legendary ease of use and Auto-Sync, which automatically downloads all your iTunes™ songs and playlists into your iPod, and keeps them up to date whenever you plug your iPod into your Mac®.

“With iPod, Apple has invented a whole new category of digital music player that lets you put your entire music collection in your pocket and listen to it wherever you go,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With iPod, listening to music will never be the same again...”

Thank you to TUAW, for the heads up. Light the candles for the iPod!

    The "iPod"
The name iPod was proposed by Vinnie Chieco, a freelance copywriter, who (with others) was called by Apple to figure out how to introduce the new player to the public. After Chieco saw a prototype, he thought of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey and the phrase "Open the pod bay door, Hal!", which refers to the white EVA Pods (below) of the Discovery One spaceship. Joseph N. Grasso of New Jersey had originally listed an "ipod" trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in July 2000 for Internet kiosks. The first ipod kiosks had been demonstrated to the public in New Jersey in March 1998, and commercial use began in January 2000. The trademark was registered by the USPTO in November 2003, and Grasso assigned it to Apple Computer, Inc. in 2005...

It's funny how people (Mac fanboys included) bashed the iPod during its initial release, but now, it's pretty much ubiquitous.

    Happy Birthday iPod.

    Hi barns,
There's always two sides to the coin. Thank you for the article. It's good to have a dose of skepticism once in a while, don't you think? Otherwise, a product will not get to the state of near-perfection if it fails to convince the unbelievers at some point.
