Apple ipod off-warranty service: great and crazy at the same time
Read this from the Apple ipod support FAQ:
-----------
> iPod warranty has expired. What are my service options?
Apple offers two service options for iPods that are no longer within warranty. If your iPod, iPod photo, U2 iPod or iPod mini requires service only because the battery’s ability to hold an electrical charge has diminished, Apple will replace your iPod for a service fee of $59, plus $6.95 shipping.
If you own an iPod, iPod photo, or U2 iPod and it requires service for any other issue, Apple will replace your iPod for a service fee of $249, plus $6.95 shipping. iPod mini customers can receive out of warranty service for $199, plus $6.95 shipping and handling. iPod nano customers can receive out of warranty service for $199 (2 GB model) and $249 (4 GB model), plus $6.95 shipping and handling.
-----------
The first one, for defective batteries, sounds like a great way to refresh your ipod for only $67, as normally these refurbished ipods look great...might even have some warranty for the replacement unit - anyone has done this?
The second one, for non-battery issue, is a crazy proposition as it is like $43 less than the price of a brand new 30gb ipod video!

It's a roundabout way of saying, "buy a new one!".
